Il suo nome deriva dal Provenzale 'Seò' che sta a significare 'Cresta o Crinale', infatti questa montagna è composta da bianche rocce calcaree a differenza delle cime circostanti. La sua cima offre un balcone panoramico notevole sul Gruppo Nord del Monviso e sul Re di Pietra stesso.
