Opis:
The Monarch caterpillar is the focus of this video and how its structure relates to its function. The video is based on the physical anatomy (structure) and how the parts are used (function) for survival. I review the head with 12 eyes, mandibles, antennae, maxillary palps and discuss their use and function. I show how biologists identify the the insect regions head, thorax, and abdomen on the caterpillar and how segments are numbered. We look at the tentacles or filaments of the caterpillar and their sensory use and how the rear end ones might confuse predators. The six segmented legs of the thorax are compared and contrasted with the ten 'prolegs' on the abdomen and how they all function in unison is illustrated.
