Opis: Here is a violet species you are garanteed to identify accurately everytime. There are almost 600 species of violets, with great variation, and hybridize freely. Violet ildflower identification can be challenging but the Halberd or Spear shaped leaf of the Halberd Leaf Violet is unmistakeable. Also known as the Halberd-leaved Violet or Halberd-leaved yellow violet (Viola Hastata) this yellow violet species has a unique leaf shape. The name Halberd comes from the medievil weapon that was designed to split open helmets of opposing knights. The leaf of this yellow violet is said to be shaped like that of a halberd. This yellow violet is also known as the Spearleaf Violet. Like other violets all parts of this plant are edible. Plant foragers will be interested in learning about this plant. Leaves can be eaten in salads or cooked as a pot herb. Flowers can be eaten or used to make jams, jellys, syrups or even wine. This violet grows in deep rich woodland soils. It is a spring ephemeral wildflower or a woodland wildflower. The flower itself is a bright yellow and has dark lines on the lower petal leading to the interior of the flower. These lines guide a bee in search of nectar to the back of the flower where the nectar is stored. To get to the nectar the bee must push through pollen laden stamens. The pollen brushes off on the hairy bee and pollen is carried from flower to flower, fullfilling the purpose of the flower.
