Thermogenic Skunk Cabbage generates its own heat to get a jump start on all forest plants. While it looks delicious, Skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus) deters herbivory by its bad taste and skunky smell and calcium oxalate that will form needle-like crystals on contact with saliva causing a burning sensation and inflamation. Eye catching on hikes and visible from cars in marshy areas, skunk cabbage dominates the scene in early spring. Skunk cabbage will bloom before leaves pushing up an unusual flower as early as February even melting through snow and ice! Skunk cabbage also has a huge rhizome, often more than a foot across, that is deep in the ground. After the growing season, skunk cabbage uses unusual contractile roots to pull it deeper in the ground, year after year. My channel is dedicated to teaching about nature and the environment.
