HI ALL! In early June of 2022 I set out with a goal of setting the OVERALL fastest known time (FKT) on the 288 mile Benton MacKaye Trail. Day 2 started with a relatively tame plan at Fontana Dam Visitor Center going sobo for Pheasant Fields Picnic Area. This was supposed to be a straightforward 40 miles. As things go in FKTs the plans changed drastically when night fell. Around 8-9 I started seeing the dark clouds rolling in accompanied by loud thunder. For the next 4 hours I was hiking along a somewhat exposed ridgeline during a storm. The full story of my experience during this storm will be pinned in the comments. Long story short I showed up to the support van around 1:30am and the first thing my mom said to me was “I thought you were dead.” 30 miles into day 2 I decided to call it a day.
