Reichsgraf Hans Caspar von Bothmer ließ das Schloss als Ruhesitz zwischen 1726 und 1732 erbauen. Der im diplomatischen Dienst in England stehende Graf hat allerdings die Fertigstellung des Schlosses nicht mehr erlebt.
