Expecting only 'smooth sailing' on the trail of life will result in disappointment. We don't want bad things to happen to us, but we should at least be aware that sometimes they DO happen. We make mistakes. Friends let us down. Life isn't always easy. Having some expectation for these challenges actually leads to better preparedness and less disappointment.
