Die Burg wurde im 12. Jahrhundert auf einem Felssporn erbaut und wird 1156 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Die heutige Ruine liegt 6,4 km südwestl. von Gföhl am rechten Ufer der Krems.
Bereits 1456 wird die Burg als öde bezeichnet und die ehemalige nicht besonders ausgedehnte Burganlage befindet sich heute im Zustand fortschreitenden Verfalls.
