Dale Gallimore a lifelong farmer in Southwest Virginia shares his experience and observations about the loss of species he has seen in his lifetime. He talks about how common bullfrogs were and how they would harvest many to eat for cookouts with friends and families. He shares his observations about the decline in bullfrogs(Lithobates catesbeianus), hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) and other organisms. He talks about eating snapping turtles as well and how they were prepared and the different flavors of meat from them. This is a fascinating personal perspective and view of what science is now documenting. Of the 6000 worldwide species of amphibians, 300 hundred occur in the US. They USGS reports a 3.79% average decline per year of amphibians including in protected areas such as National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges. One third of the world's amphibians are now threatened with extinction. 168 species of amphibians have become extinct in the last 20 years. 43% of amphibian species are in population decline. Amphibians in the US are declining so fast they will disappear from one half of their habitats in the next tweny years.
