Montone (PG) è stato costruito su un colle in bella posizione panoramica tra due affluenti dello stesso Tevere: il Carpina e il Lana.
Castello già nell' altomedioevo, fu poi controllata dalle famiglie che negli anni ebbero il dominio su tutta la zona, come: i Del Monte, i Fortebraccio, i Vitelli; intorno alla metà del XVI secolo, infine, fu assoggettata allo Stato Pontificio.
