Il castello, nel comune di Corciano PG, sorge su un colle roccioso e insieme al suo borgo è un tipico insediamento di altura nato per esigenze difensive e di salubrità.
E’ posto tra le due strade che da Perugia conducono una a Cortona e l’altra a Città della Pieve, e tra i torrenti Caina e Genna. Area abitata fin dall'antichità come attestano alcuni ritrovamenti relativi ad un carro etrusco bronzeo (sec vi a.c.) e ad un'area sepolcrale di grandi dimensioni (sec.ii-i a.c.). scavi condotti nell'ultimo decennio in località strozzacapponi hanno restituito circa 60 tombe a camera realizzate nel banco di travertino locale. in età medievale, mutò il suo nome in castel san mariano.
